Protect Your Pet This Thanksgiving with These Tips from a Campbell Vet

Protect-Your-Pet-This-Thanksgiving-with-These-Tips-from-a-Campbell-Vet

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, you are probably thinking about how you can include your furry family member in the festivities. What animal wouldn't appreciate a holiday filled with delicious goodies?  Before the holiday gets here, however, it’s crucial to get familiar with some things that could possibly be dangerous to your beloved pet.  The vets here at Happy Valley Pet Hospital never want companion animals to suffer from preventable health issues. That's why our very own Campbell vet made the decision to discuss a couple of Thanksgiving pet safety tips. Keep on reading to find out more!

Don't Share Foods Containing Onions, Garlic, Etc.

Garlic, onions, scallions, leeks, etc. belong to the allium family. These flavorful ingredients can cause anemia in dogs and cats. Some animals are more sensitive to onions, garlic, etc. than others, so it is best to avoid sharing them.

Don’t Share Fat and Bones

Regardless of how much your pet begs, fat drippings and bones aren't suitable treats. Bones can become lodged in the digestive tract or throat or cause vomiting, diarrhea, or potentially lethal tears. Eating excessive amounts of fat can cause serious health problems like pancreatitis, as well. When fixing your pet's meal, lean turkey is the best option.

Save Dessert for the Humans

Some common dessert ingredients are harmful to animals. Chocolate, raisins, grapes, and xylitol can cause severe illness. Even small amounts of alcohol in desserts or unbaked bread are dangerous. Dogs and cats shouldn’t eat lots of sugar anyway.  This Thanksgiving, save the desserts for your human family and friends.
